Millions of online purchases happen each day and there are hundreds of thousands of returns that are processed daily as well. Return shipping policies for online purchases vary from retailer to retailer and it’s always good to review those policies for each retailer and each product. Yes, return shipping policies differ from product to product for most retailers as well. So let’s take a look at the different types of return policies for Amazon, Ebay, and Overstock.com…
Amazon Return Policy
Standard Return Policy
Amazon’s general return policy is 30 days from the date of receipt of the purchase. Whether you purchased from Amazon and it was fulfilled by them or via Warehouse Deals, or a third-party seller, this is the general return policy. However, it’s not that simple. When you purchase something via a third-party seller on Amazon they have their own return policies and you must abide by those and not Amazon’s.
When you purchase something via a third-party seller on Amazon they have their own return policies and you must abide by those and not Amazon’s. Make sure to check the seller’s “Policy” section for their return policy before purchase so you know what to expect and aren’t blind-sided when something goes wrong. And oh yes, if you do send something back make sure it’s sent via a trackable method and sent with the adequate amount of “Insurance” or “Declared Value” to cover the item. If the package is lost or damaged during the return processes…well it will be the seller who will throw up their hands.
Amazon Fresh items are not returnable and Handmade at Amazon items cannot be returned if customized unless there is an error on the sellers part, at which time you must notify the sellers within 14 days of receipt of the product.

Amazon’s return shipping policy is as below.
If you return an item using a prepaid method (dropoff or pickup) from the Online Returns Center, and the reason for return is not a result of an Amazon error, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund unless your item qualifies for a free return.
Overstock.com Return Policy
Standard Return Policy
Overstock.com’s Standard Return Policy is just like Amazon’s, 30 days as long as the item is new or unused condition. You may however, return damaged or defective products at the time of receipt.
If you take longer than 30 days then keep this in mind:
- Because products devalue over time, we offer partial refunds for items returned over 30 days after delivery
- We may reduce the refund based on the condition of the merchandise
- We may also deduct the original and return shipping charges from your refund
- If we send you a replacement item, we must receive the original item at our warehouse within 30 days your return initiation. Otherwise, we will charge you full price for the replacement item
Also, there is a long list of items that are non-returnable to check those out take a look their Non-returnable Items page
And if you order any of the below items, take a look at the Product Specific Returns page to make sure you know what
- Computers and electronics
- Large Appliances
- Jewelry, Watches, and Accessories
- Eyeglasses and Sunglasses
When it comes to Over-sized items the return policy is different so make sure you review that page if you are purchasing a large item.
When it comes to the shipping cost for returning the item, Overstock.com will pick up the tab if you are using one of their provided labels to return an item within 30 days, if new or unused. If the item is open or returned after the 30 day period, then a partial refund for the item will be given along with a deduction of the original and return shipping costs.
Ebay Return Policy
Standard Return Policy
Ebay’s return policy is different from seller to seller, so make sure you look at the return policy for each item you purchase. Some sellers don’t accept returns and are therefore bound by “All Sales are Final”. However, others will be very liberal so read the policy and consider the return policy along with who pays for shipping and return shipping.
Speaking of return shipping, depending on the seller’s policy, Ebay or the seller may provide a label for returns. If they do then make sure you understand how the original shipping cost and return shipping cost will be treated when getting your money back. In other words, they may deduct the shipping cost from the return. If they don’t pay for the return then you will have to shell out the money.
So, what did we learn from the above? READ the return policy especially if you have the slightest inclination that you may not like the item. Don’t be caught off-guard and do your due diligence. You may also want to compare the cost of return shipping as sometimes it is cheaper to return an item yourself than to use one of their return labels.
